From research results to products
Collaboration is a key element of any R&D project and is often crucial to its success. It allows the transfer of skills and knowledge, and access to facilities, expertise and new ideas that would otherwise be out of reach.
Through our participation in national and European scientific projects and engineering conferences, we help move high-level expertise from the laboratory to the market.
Working with Greece’s TTO network
Technology transfer is the set of processes through which research organisations pass their results to another organisation, public or private, that develops them further into new, innovative products and services for the benefit of the economy and society. As the General Secretariat for Research and Innovation (GSRI) describes it, it rests on two pillars:
Intellectual property protection
Obtaining and managing patents, industrial designs, utility models, trademarks and copyright, with clear policies on inventors, ownership, financing and the sharing of benefits.
Commercial exploitation
Turning protected results into value through collaboration with industry, licensing or transfer of technologies, or the creation of spin-off companies.
Our role
PANGAEA R&D® collaborates with the majority of the Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs) in Greece, set up in universities and research centres under the GSRI initiative. We act as a bridge between their research results and the businesses and public bodies that can use them, supporting the valorisation of R&D results in the private and the public sector: from assessing a technology and finding the right partner to pilots, licensing and spin-off creation.
EKT & Innovation EKT
We also work with the National Documentation Centre (EKT), the public organisation that promotes knowledge, research, innovation and digital transformation in Greece, and with its innovation services, Innovation EKT.
Through Innovation EKT, EKT supports businesses, researchers and innovators at every step: networking, partner search, and building innovation and digital skills. It does so as the National Contact Point for Horizon Europe and in synergy with Enterprise Europe Network Hellas, EIT Health and Smart Attica EDIH.
Together, we connect R&D results with companies and organisations in Greece and abroad, opening routes to international partnerships, funding and the market.

Mapping the Technology Transfer Offices in Greece
The first survey of the Technology Transfer Offices of 12 major Greek universities and research centres, carried out by researchers of the National Documentation Centre (EKT) within the EIT Health hub in Greece. It examines their structure, regulations and services, and their industrial and intellectual property outputs. Published in the Journal of the Knowledge Economy (2024).
Key findings
- With a few notable exceptions, the Greek technology transfer ecosystem is underdeveloped and unstructured, with significant room for improvement.
- A narrow majority of the institutions, about half, report that they can provide the core technology transfer services, so many still do not; few offer hands-on services such as defining licensees’ needs or technical advice for implementing new technologies.
- Services mostly reach small groups, of up to 10 people.
- Industrial and intellectual property output is low: few start-ups and spin-offs, and patents in very small numbers.
- Networking is strong: offices collaborate with public bodies, companies and international research centres.
- Officials believe their institutions can offer companies new technological solutions, yet businesses rarely turn to them for new technologies and are not familiar with how to propose a collaboration.
- Public funding by GSRI has helped institutions set up regulations and policies on patent examination and collaboration with firms.
Policy recommendations
- Increase regular funding for TTO structures and plan for their long-term sustainability, including cooperation with financial institutions.
- Staff the offices with specialised technology transfer professionals, and define and update institutional regulations and policies.
- Upskill and reskill staff, from technology assessment to negotiation and communication.
- Publish clear procedures for businesses to submit cooperation proposals.
- Link these actions to smart specialisation 2021–2027 and the Development Plan for the Greek Economy.
The gap between businesses and research institutions is exactly where PANGAEA R&D® works: we help companies and public bodies find, assess and adopt research results, and help research teams reach the market.
